The King: Netflix Movie Review

A while back, I added a bunch of Gael Garcia Bernal movies to my Netflix queue, for my own personal superfan reasons, and finally got the movie “The King” this week.  The movie was originally released in 2005, so you may have already seen/heard of it.

Regardless of my personal feelings about Mr. Bernal, the movie is exquisite.  If you are into beautiful looking movies with a heart-breaking story and intertwining characters, this just may be the movie for you.

Gael Garcia Bernal continues to play the slightly troubled young sex addict he usually plays.  Pell James (a 28 year old) comes off convincingly as a 16 year old girl in search of a true connection with anyone, even if it’s some random dude that just got out of the Navy.  Paul Dano (the older brother in Little Miss Sunshine) has a southern accent, bow-hunts deer and tries to promote Intelligent Design to his school board.  William Hurt is a very effective pastor with a past he wishes to keep secret from his family and congregation.  God seeks to execute wrath and retribution upon all involved.

In summary, this movie won’t change your life, but it will change the way you look at your half-sister.
